Industries With the Highest Projected Growth in Southeast Asia

3 min read

According to a World Bank survey, Southeast Asia has consistently shown annual growth above Asian averages. This pace has certainly caught the eye of global companies who are looking to establish a presence there. China may be the king overall in the wider sweep, but the ASEAN bloc is beginning to bear its teeth as a very profitable prince.

There are key factors behind the robust boom. The Artificial Intelligence industry has certainly ensured that countries like Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia have benefited from being at the forefront of the electronics supply chain. Donald Trump may be calling the shots on “super intelligence”, but the American tech giants are pumping billions into the area.

Overall, the ASEAN region thrives on electronics, machinery, and mobile phones as big exports, while industries like textiles and footwear are also strong.

ASEAN is a Big Manufacturing Hub

Indonesia and Thailand act as the manufacturing hubs for the region. Thailand, nicknamed the “Detroit of Asia”, is a prime example of automotive and electronics excellence, producing over 2 million vehicles annually for global brands like Toyota and Honda. Those Japanese giants have also set up assembly plants in Indonesia, capitalizing on domestic labor and the growing market. Now Malaysia is getting in on the act too.

SMEs Need to Understand Local Territory, Behavior and Pricing to Thrive

While the potential is there to expand for businesses in the region, SMEs need to understand crucial factors that reflect and provide the right approach for emerging sectors. These will typically include issues like regulatory codes within the region, the capacity or scarcity of the local workforce, local pricing, and the cultural messaging that resonates with the populace.

There is also the question of political stability, as well as infrastructure. For instance, a country like Singapore is highly developed in terms of logistics and transport networks, but other parts of the ASEAN geography will not be so well-connected.

Gambling is Also Growing With Big Casino Markets

Unsurprisingly, Southeast Asia is a hotbed for gambling growth given its young population and telecom infrastructure in key cities. Smartphones are now very accessible, and with data plans that are within budget, countries like the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand are coming through. Singapore is the third largest casino market in the world.

Just as DraftKings is one of the big gambling companies in the United States, Malaysia’s Genting has a big presence in ASEAN with resorts and casinos.

Malaysia and Singapore have regulations in place to validate iGaming markets, although regionally there is a diverse set of legislation. The ASEAN bloc has a history of gambling, and its popularity can be further projected by reflecting the cultural and specific character of the territory. Developers are now producing games based on historical events and popular TV shows to attract domestic audiences.

Electronic Vehicle Market is Booming in Southeast Asia

Despite the uncertainties of turbulent economic tariffs from Washington, there are some fantastic markets where investors can shoot for the stars. Indonesia and Thailand are a prime example of the potential for the manufacture and assembly of two-wheelers and passenger Electric Vehicles.

The electric car revolution is taking off, with some projections quoting the value of the market at up to 350 billion in 2030. Even Vietnam is trying to take its own brand to global markets.

Indonesia: the SME King in the Region

Indonesia can be considered Southeast Asia’s SME big boy, with micro and SMEs contributing to well over 90 per cent of job creation. These enterprises are concentrated in agriculture, trade, hotels and restaurants, as well as manufacturing in sectors such as wood products, furniture, garments, and beverages.

Indonesia is a mobile-first economy, and the opportunities for SMEs are huge in the social commerce sector. There is a huge opportunity for SMEs to thrive with strong foreign investment, a youthful population and the increase in digital adoption, making it a ripe prospect.

The AI Boom is Going to Pump Billions into Southeast Asia

But it's the AI boom that will really excite the Southeast Asian region going forward. There are now more than 20,000 data centres in places like Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines, with thousands more to come. The big boys of Amazon and Microsoft are pumping money into the cloud infrastructure. This will ensure a sunny horizon for one of the fastest-growing geographies on the map.

The battle for prominence between China and the United States has partially created a great deal more trade in what is now the fifth-largest economy in the world. The prominence of the A. I sector means that the territory has benefited from maintaining ties with both superpowers. It will stand on its own soon enough.
